01About This Special Issue

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence workloads, hyperscale data centers, and emerging 6G services is increasing demand for high-capacity, low-latency, energy-efficient, and resilient optical communication networks. Advances in coherent transmission, high-speed optical interconnects, machine learning, and network automation create opportunities to improve the design and operation of next-generation communication infrastructure. However, challenges remain in scalable network control, real-time fault detection, interoperability, energy consumption, and the reliable deployment of intelligent networking technologies.
This Special Issue aims to advance research on AI-driven optical networks supporting next-generation data centers and 6G infrastructure. It welcomes rigorous theoretical, simulation-based, experimental, and deployment-oriented studies that demonstrate novel architectures, algorithms, measurement methods, and practical performance improvements. Particular interest is given to reproducible evaluations of machine learning techniques in coherent optical transport, network observability, and autonomous operation.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  1. Machine learning for coherent optical communication and signal processing
  2. High-capacity 400G, 800G, and 1.6T optical transport and interconnects
  3. AI-assisted network telemetry, observability, and fault localization
  4. Optical networking for AI clusters and hyperscale data centers
  5. Digital twins for optical network modeling and predictive maintenance
  6. Reinforcement learning for routing, resource allocation, and optimization
  7. Software-defined optical networking and autonomous orchestration
  8. Energy-efficient optical infrastructure and sustainable network operation
  9. Optical-wireless convergence and intelligent transport for 6G
  10. Interoperability, resilience, and security of coherent optical systems

We invite original research articles, systematic reviews, methodological studies, and evidence-based case studies. Contributions should clearly describe their methods, evaluation criteria, limitations, and relevance to modern networks and communications. The Special Issue seeks to connect advances in AI and photonics with practical challenges in reliable, scalable communications infrastructure.
